Grid Based Combat::Goblin Hall::[Part 1::>>]

This is an extended grid based combat simulation drawing on the Kobold Hall sample encounters from the D&D 4e GM's Handbook. Details and map elements have been deliberately kept vague and in some places altered or omitted, after all it is WoTC's copyright material and no challenge is intended. 

 

Pre-encounter. An adventuring party of Brutus (a barbarian mercenary), Rikard (a civilised spy) and Walliam (a civilised sorcerer) head to Goblin Hall to see if they can find out who is causing problems in the neighbourhood.

 

Part 1 - Into the depths

Initiative: Rickard 23, Walliam 17, Goblins 14,  Brutus 6

CAs: Rickard 3, Walliam 3, Gobs 2, Brutus 2 +1 (shield)

Starting point

Combat Round 1.

23 Rickard-1: moves into room

17 Walliam-1 Befuddle (78) vs Goblin 5 (Persist 68 fail). G5 befuddled.

14 Goblins 1 & 2 hear the barked challenge cut off and sound of magic. Equip spears and half-move to see what’s happening.(1,1)

14 Goblins 3&4 make perception test for alertness. 24. Success. Now aware.(1,1)

6 Brutus-1 ½ move into room and cast Bladesharp 2. Success.

23 Rickard-2 half moves to corner and tries stealth to see without being seen. 78. Fail.

17 Walliam-2. ½ move and befuddle (55 success) vs Goblin 1 (Persistence 81 fail). Goblin 1 befuddled.

14 G1 delays(2). G2(2) pushes past G1 (1/2 move and equip shield). G1 becomes hostile to G2.

14 G3 equip spear. G4 equip sling. G5 heads to a safe corner (2,2,2)

6 Brutus2 ½ move and cast Protect 2. 17 success.

23 Rickard3, ½ move to step into corridor, throw dagger and step back. 68. Fail.

17 Walliam3. ½ move and prepares parry.

Summary. As the party move into the gloomy room they see a Goblin on the other side of a Glowing pit. Walliam immediately fires off a befuddle in the hope of silencing it before it can raise the alarm. However the sound of magic and start of a barked challenge has alerted creatures nearby. Brutus moves cautiously forward while casting Bladesharp while Rikard tries to move stealthily to a corner in order to peer around. He sees two more goblins and they see him. Meanwhile Walliam spots another Goblin creeping out from the corridor behind the first goblin and befuddles it too. A third goblin in the same area seeing its companions affected by magic has grabbed its spear and buckler. Brutus is still advancing carefully into the room, looking to find a good position while casting Protect 2. Rikard tries ducking around a corner and throwing a dagger but it flies wide.

Note: G2 has 3 CAs due to shield.

23 Rickard-1 delay

17 Walliam-1 delay

14 G1 shouts angrily at G2. G2 heads to corner of sludge to prep parry and get away from G1. G3 equip shield. G4 prepare attack (sling) G5 tries to make sense of it all. 

6 Brutus-1 ½ move and prepare parry.

6 Gob 4-1 attacks Brutus with a sling but he parries it with his heater shield. Attack (Sling 07 success) Brutus-2 Parry (shield 78 success).

6 Rickard-1 ½ move to corridor and prepare parry

6 Walliam-1 ½ move following Brutus.

23 Rickard-2 attacks Goblin 2 his rapier but the goblin parries successfully with its Buckler. Attack (rapier 21, success)  Gob 2-2 Parry (Buckler,  28, success).

17 Walliam-2 delay

14 Gob 2-3 ready a parry; Gob 3-2 ½ move to Rickard and ready parry, Gob 4-2 reload

6 Brutus-3 swings at Goblin 2 with his longsword but the goblin parries successfully. Attack (Longsword 42 success) vs Gob 2-3 Parry (buckler, 46, success)

6 Walliam-2 prepare Neutralise Magic counter-cast

17 Walliam-3 prepare Neutralise Magic counter-cast. Basically Walliam is hanging out readying a spell just in case.

Combat Round 3

G2 & G3 have 3 CAs

23 Rikard-1 attacks Goblin 3 with his rapier but the Goblin was able to turn it aside without much effort. Attack (rapier, 73, fail) Conditional Parry (no action)

17 Walliam-1 delay

14 Gob 2-1attacks Rickard with its shortspear. Rickard fails his parry and suffers an impale in his left leg. This is a serious wound and Rickard falls stunned. Attack (shortspear 51 success) vs Rikard-2 Cond Parry (rapier, 89, fail).  CM – Impale. 4 damage to left Leg. Serious Wound! Rikard Resilience 19 success but loses. Rikard falls prone and stunned 3 CAs.

14 Gob3-1 also attacks the falling Rikard but misses. (spear 83 fail) vs Rikard Conditional Parry (no action).

14 Gob 4-1 aims its sling waiting for a target (no target +6)

14 Walliam-2 casts Treat Wounds (8, Range +1) targeting Rikard. 54. Success. Cost 2 MPs. Walliam doesn't yet know that the wound is too serious for the spell but hopefully it will still do some good. A better action would have been to multi target the spell to cover the whole party. It would cost 1 more MP and 1 more CA but would be in place for future problems

6 Brutus-1 attacks the Goblin that took out Rikard, trying to take the pressure off him. The goblin fails its parry so Brutus aims for its exposed head. With 10 damage inflicted, the goblin suffers a major wound and is decapitated.  (Longsword 27 success) vs Gob 2-2 Parry (Buckler 92 fail).  CM – choose location head. 10 dam to head. Major Wound. Resilience 68 fail. Gob 2 Dead.

23 Rikard-3[stun1] still stunned from the blow, attempts to roll out of the way. The nearest goblin pokes down with his spear at the ground where Rikard was. Change range (Evade 50 success). Gob 3-3 counterattack (Spear 34, success). Evade wins. Rikard rolls to one side.

17 Walliam-3 concentrating Treat Wounds

14 Gob 4-2 seeing a target slings a stone at the prone Rikard, hitting him a glancing blow on the head. attack (sling-20+6 06 success) vs Rickard (prone). CM – choose location Head. 2 damage. Minor wound.

6 Brutus ½ move and prepare parry towards Gob 3.

End of round: Treat Wounds. Can’t affect leg but does heal head. Rikcard's head fully healed.

Combat Round 4

23 Rickard-1[stun2] casts Heal 2. 40. success. +2 HP in leg now converting the injury into a minor wound.

17 Walliam concentrates on Treat Wound.

14 Gob 3-1 attacks Brutus with his spear but Brutus's parry deflects the attack.  (Spear 15 success) vs Brutus Cparry1 (Shield 48 success).

14 Gob 4-1 reload

6 Brutus-1 viciously lunges at Goblin 3, almost slipping on blood. The Goblin fails its parry and Brutus's sword cuts deep into its head, knocking it unconscious. Attack (longsword 99 fumble. Hero Point reroll 36 success) vs Gob 3 CParry1 (Buckler, 64 fail). CM – choose head. 7 damage. Serious wound. Resilience 59. Fail.

23 Rickard-2[stun3] stands.

17 Walliam-2 continues concentrating on Treat Wounds

14 Gob4-2 It can see danger. It slings its stone at Brutus who manages to raise his shield in the way and then starts to back off. Attack and ½ move (sling+6 27 success) vs Brutus Parry-2 (shield 41, success)

6 Brutus-3 full move to portcullis lever. (not enough CAs to charge this round)

23 Rickard-3 – assesses situation, checks befuddled goblins

17 Walliam-3 Concentrate and ½ move.

End of Round: Treat Wounds,  Rikard's left leg completely healed.
