Combat

A large, surly and spectacularly unruly race of goblinoids, an average bugbear is about the size in terms of weight and reach as brown bear. Despite this, they have a cultural propensity to attacks from ambush so tend to be stealthier than might be expected. Although they have claws, they are not large or hard enough to count as formidable natural weapons but do give them an unarmed combat damage of 1D6. Bugbears prefer simple two-handed weapons though some use large one-handed weapons alongside shields. Morningstars, Ball & Chains and Maces are favoured close combat weapons with stun location, bash and bypass parry being the most common Combat Manoeuvres chosen. Javelins are favoured as missile weapons.

Despite their size, bugbears are proficient at ambushing and stealth. Their claws, however, make fine manipulation and many arts and crafts difficult.

Most bugbears have just 1-3 points of Common Magic. Bandit's Cloak, bludgeon, protection, speedart, multimissile and befuddle are popular spells. Higher Magic is restricted to specialists who zealously guard their secrets and the status it gives them.

The Champion lives for no-holds-barred melee combat. Given a chance he will cast all of his common magic first. Coordination will increase his DEX by 4, giving him an extra Combat Action and adding +4% to his close combat and +8% to his ranged combat skills. His favoured weapon combination is mace and shield. Against well-defended opponents he'll choose Bash to try and knock an opponent to the ground in order to take advantage of his huge damage modifier.

Notes

The seasoned hunter is a fearsome ambush predator. With Bandit's cloak pre-cast it is a potential 93% in Stealth. Favourite tactics are to Cast multimissile on two javelins and Coordination 2 on itself (which will add +8% to its Javelin skill and +4% to any stealth tests). With one javelin held in its left hand it can easily throw both in a single combat round. Providing it has surprise it'll choose impale for its real javelins and bash for its multimissiles hoping to knock down or seriously wound the opponent enough that it can also throw its second javelin against a target who is incapable of evading.

Notes

This spirit walker is starting down the Strangler's path. It can provide strong magical support from the shadows with Second Sight and Countermagic. If it can pick out a weaker foe it will manifest both the Moth and the Strangler, enhance its claws and then strike from surprise in an attempt to grip and strangle an opponent.

Notes

A Bugbear acolyte is never seen alone, always travelling with a retinue of warriors or a champion sworn to defend it to the death. This is generally due to the fact that family members are often held hostage. Although not particularly dangerous in melee combat by bugbear standards, an acolyte relies on enhancing its retinue. Blessing can add 35% to a cult skill, while a Berserk bugbear is a terrifying prospect. Befuddle or Demoralise can play havoc with defences while strong defensive magic can keep its retinue safe from most magical threats.

Notes

A bugbear shaman is an army in its own right. Should it be caught in a fight to the death it will use its spirits unsparingly. The curse spirits can quickly and horribly incapacitate its enemies. Its fetch will cast common magic to befuddle major threats while being ready with countermagic. The shaman himself in extremis will manifest the strangler and its bear claws to attack and throttle an enemy. Its biggest weakness is a lack of protection against missile attacks so it will spend its time in the shadows, sending its spirits to harass enemy archers.
